THE full moon floated atop Earth with a billion stars entourage. It was evening in Kingston; and both nature and human seemed to seek repose for the day.
But Marcuz seemed to just be starting his. As he stepped out from a taxi to be welcomed by his waiting uncle.
Vincent almost couldn’t contain his joy when he saw his grown-up nephew.
“You are man now, Marcuz!” he said, smiling as he walked the boy to his house. “You’re so grown that I can’t tell anyone your childish stuff anymore.”
“Come on, Uncle! I told you I’ll outgrow those kiddie stuff one day!”
“Hm, you’re so right, boy. But I can still tell the stories to you if not to anyone.”
“Now I must ask, Uncle VC… must you really tell something?”
“I must, my boy! How will I boast this big man is my nephew!”
They both laughed as they walked inside the house now.
Vincent was a successful scientist. So the man had got a big structure of building for a house.
But Vincent wasn’t the social type, so it took a while for the man to start a family.
It was only recently he sent news to his nephews that he’d met a woman he’d love to spend the rest of his life with. She was also a scientist.
So the couple had a private wedding and started a family.
Marcuz wasn’t around for the wedding, but Luca was. Still the young dude sent his best wishes and apologized for the absence.
So that night when Marcuz visited his uncle, he met the man’s family for the first time and it was all cheers.
Now after Vincent had treated his nephew to a hearty dinner, the two men decided to talk outside under the bright moonlight.
The younger man decided to share his worries about Cannon. He told the man the things he saw and heard on his last day on campus.
Those things that made him flee the school without looking back.
It was the first time he would share those things with anyone. So the wound in his heart was still fresh.
Therefore as he spoke the words, a small tear coursed down his eye. The boy cried as he finished:
“They have killed minds, and we’re still talking that. Now they are taking lives!
“I just wish… I really just wish those old men will so be gone! Shut in prison, or sentenced to death!
“I wish they’ll all just let Cannon be, and leave!
“But there’s nothing I can do! No, there’s really nothing I wish to do because it’s dangerous. It’s just too dangerous!
Vincent heaved a quiet breath now. Then he spoke.
“You know you didn’t have to see the things you saw, don’t you?”
“Of course, I do. I really regret going up there to get my bike that night. If I hadn’t gone for the bike, I wouldn’t have seen that horror.”
“Now have you asked why Peter lingered around to watch Christ’s Passion while the others ran away?
“It’s no pleasant scene, but he watched all the same.
“Of course, he didn’t write any book about it like Mathew, Mark and John. But he watched it all the same.”
Marcuz came up now. “I think that’s because he loved Jesus. He really loved Jesus, so he wanted to see everything.”
“That’s it, boy,” exclaimed Vincent. “He really loved the Lord, so he would always find a way to be around Him.”
He faced the kid. “So if it wasn’t your bike, there’ll be other reasons. You will always want to linger and do things around Cannon.”
Marcuz was quiet now. He knew his uncle was right on this.
He’d fought everyone to keep his love for his college. So it was obvious he liked Cannon.
Vincent went on speaking:
“Now in spite of Peter’s love, he saw things that tested his love. So he later fled the scene to hide.
“Still in all sense of logic and reason, we will say Peter wasn’t so wrong to run.
“He saw an injustice. He saw a situation where the righteous Savior was persecuted. That sight got at him so much he feared and fled.
“So with what you saw – even though that boy Lucious was no Savior, it is right for you to run.
“Anyone could see what you saw, but what difference would it make if they do not love Cannon?
“It must be you because you love the school.
“Now I’m not saying it’s your plight because you love her, no.
“This is it… you didn’t just see or heard, but you also have the recording of their conversation—”
“I can’t go to the police with it!” Marcuz talked up. “You know it is dangerous?”
“Of course I know,” smiled Vincent. “I told you it’s right to flee in all sense of logic. I wouldn’t tell you to do something that reckless.
“Now this is it. You still have the evidence of the murder – why did you think that secret of theirs got into your hands?”
Marcuz thought for a bit, but he had no clue.
So Vincent resumed. “It’s the same reason that just Peter saw a truth that the other disciples didn’t know yet.
“He said that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God – when He asked them who they say He was.
“So, that day, the Lord promised that He would build His Church on Peter. Because He saw what only God could reveal.”
Marcuz heaved a breath.
“Still Peter fled and returned to his fishing after everything. But here comes my destination,” said Vincent.
“Jesus went back for the man and called him back to His fold.
“And because the Lord had named him the rock on whom He’d build His Church, Peter must return and take his place.
“He was to lead the apostles. Feed the flock of God. And do wonders that would convert people.
“He was to preach the first sermon, perform the first miracle, and set the Church in place.
“So Simon Peter was in every way wanted. Even there in that very place he’d fled from.”
Marcuz bowed his gaze.
“So what do I see in your story?” the older one went one.
“I see a man who loves Cannon and who’s got something to correct in there.
“Even now, you still want those old folks behind bars. You still want Cannon cleansed.
“I was the one that tried to stop you from going. And when you insisted, I told you to hide your wings.
“But then my heart couldn’t rest after you left for there. So I kept praying for you.
“Yet a day came that I realized through the leading of the Holy Spirit, that Cannon is right for you.
“Then again, I thought it was simply good for your academic life. So I rested my case. I never knew it would be something more.”
Marcuz raised his head. He felt curious.
“Now,” finished Vincent, “with the full pictures coming together, I’ll say you’ve got more stuff to do at Cannon.”
His listener shook his head, smiling.
“No Uncle, I’ve got nothing else to do in a place like that. What will I ever do there?
“I’m done with my degree and I don’t intend to do more studies for now. Even if I will, it won’t be at Cannon.
“Let’s just leave Peter as Peter. And let Marcuz be Marcuz.”
Vincent looked at his cute nephew and smiled.
He just smiled at him and rested the case.
