AHI and Jona ran throughout the night. They ran so fast their breath struggled to catch up. For earlier on before, they had brushed death’s rough shoulders.
The two boys had been off and on in the palace courts, always carrying news to David on his way.
But no one would naturally suspect the tiny ones. As the affairs at hand were too grand and stately; then too gross and dangerous, for any playful chap to dabble in.
So that had been David’s ploy when he asked his priests to send him news by them… those frisky, chatty boys. But this time round, someone’s eyes caught them.
No, it wasn’t some palace official who saw them. Neither did the noble chiefs have their time.
But when Ahi and Jona hit the road this time, it was a boy like them who caught on. And he ran up the stairs to report them straightaway.
The boy had noticed the nephews going in and out of the palace. Running as though they were being chased by their fathers.
But when he found no one chasing them and saw them again running, he swiftly connected the dots.
No, they ain’t running from their fathers. They’re running to our Father-in-Israel, the father of our fathers.
They’re running because their own father sent them.
So when the young chap reported the thing to the higher-ups, it quickly came to the ears of their king. And then a pack of force men was sent to track the boys, and get them.
But then while the two messengers were leaving the palace, they caught on with the sudden twist of things. As the boys realized this: that a kid reported them.
Yes, Ahi and Jona were smart enough to lurk somewhere and observe. So they lingered and hid till they saw the watchdogs gather to assess the intel.
Thereafter the boys fled through another way. But even so, they knew they were being hounded. So they didn’t stop running.
Ahi and Jona ran throughout the night. And when the day broke, they were close to Bahurim. The town where David had been served a cold welcome.
Yes, it was that town where the people stared at the monarch. Then one young man threw stones at him like one would do a goat.
So the boys paused to rest a little. Then as the sun rose, they walked steadily till they reached the town.
Things changed when the boys reached Bahurim. For as they strode into the community, they realized that their chasers had closed in.
The young kids heard the sound of soldiers combing through the streets. And they knew they were caught.
That their paths had finally crossed with the men who chased them. It was in spite of the different routes they plied.
So whatever it was that slowed them down, the boys knew they wouldn’t be able to outrun their chasers now.
So they decided that hiding was better.
But that place was a town of enemies.
