HUSHAI raced his horse to meet the new king. And it seemed chance itself was on David’s side.
Providence had just brought the man to join Absalom, just when the latter would not suspect he’d been elsewhere.
The loyal friend to David then rode out of the pressing throng. And as soon as the lingering obeisance ceased, he raised his voice in a loud salute.
‘Long live Absalom, King of Israel!
‘Long live Absalom, King of Israel!’
Absalom looked back immediately. He recognized that voice. In fact, he could identify it in a drowsy state.
That must be Hushai, Father’s friend. But what’s a loyal friend of David doing here?
So when he turned round to look, Hushai was down at his feet, bowed to the ground already. As that man had climbed down his horse to pay homage to the newly crowned one.
Absalom was surprised. He knew how close Hushai had been to his father, the former king.
But the fast move that fate was spinning was quite effective. As the king was fooled already, with the way the situation presented itself.
So the new king responded. But he only talked down at the man.
‘Oh you’re here, old man! Isn’t my father your friend? What happened to your loyalty? What happened to your friendship?’
Hushai had the answer ready. He raised his gaze and voiced the words.
‘Your Majesty, who am I to go against whom God has chosen? Who in the land is Hushai, to go against the people’s king?
‘As you live, my lord, I am on your side! Or what privilege can be greater than this? To serve my master; then again, serve his son.
‘So, just as I have served your father, Your Royal Majesty, I will serve you in truth, I promise!’
Thereafter, the man bowed himself low again and paid homage.
But those words. They were like a declaration of a finished battle to Absalom. When in, actual fact, the fight had just begun.
If the best of my father’s friend can freely join hands with me, as the best of his counsellors has already.
If the best of David’s men can bow to me, then there is no mountain in his camp that I cannot move.
There is no hurdle on my way to the throne!
Now the young monarch felt relieved. For what those things told him was that luck was a friend. That Fate was smiling.
Truly, Absalom had gathered people’s support from Dan in the north to Beersheba down south. Yet gaining his father’s people was a different kind of thing.
It was like putting on his father’s sandals. It was like wearing David’s coat.
Yes, it was everything he’d always wanted. To own and ride everything David’s. Whether his name and fame. Or his friend or foe.
And there with him already was his father’s counsel and his father’s friend. So Absalom ordered the friend to fall behind him and joined the others.
Now together with everyone, the new king rode up to the great palace of David.
And no mortal on earth could stop him.
