AS the king’s large company crossed the Kidron Brook, David stayed put to watch everyone leave.
And there at the river bank was the Ark of God’s Covenant, set down on the ground before the high priests.
David looked at those men, those priests who wouldn’t easily let go. He watched Zadok and Abiathar, sons of the same father, standing before the Ark for his cause.
So he told himself he couldn’t have them both. That he’d got to let them go.
Yes, everything was overwhelming for the king. So he called Zadok and Abiathar aside, and gave voice to his thoughts.
‘Zadok, priest of God! Abiathar, His servant! If you will only listen, I’ll tell you what is right.
‘Look, you must return to Jerusalem. Nay, you must return with the Ark of God, together with the priests.
‘For who is David that he should have God’s Presence leave the palace with him? I have only become a fugitive with no place to run.
‘So who am I to have you carry the Ark of God before me? Please, I beg of you: go back to Absalom my son, and let the Lord be with Israel.’
His listeners looked at him with wonder spelled in their eyes. Yet David hit on the matter more.
‘If it pleases God to show me His favour, someday He may bring me back so I can see the Ark of His Presence again.
‘But if not, let Him do to me as it seems right in His sight.’
Right there, it dawned on the two that they were dealing with a broken soul, a contrite king. As they looked at themselves and breathed a sigh.
Now David moved closer and tapped the brother priests on the shoulder.
‘Zadok, take your teenager with you, your son Ahi. And Abiathar, go with your boy as well, Jona. Let the young nephews have their own lives under the new reign.’
He finished. ‘As for me, I will wait at the crossing of Jordan to receive news from you.’
With those words David won over the priests of Israel on that matter. And Zadok and Abiathar returned to Jerusalem, together with their sons as well as the Levites.
Thus, the Ark of God’s Presence was carried away from David’s company to that of a violent traitor.
It seemed a sad day as the folks watched the box leave.
But David’s God was more than a golden ark.
