KING David’s order came at last. The order was for everyone on his side at the palace.
Yet this order was one he’d never given before. At least, not in the face of an advancing foe. It was an order unlike David.
‘We must run for our lives!’ the ruler announced. ‘If we want to escape the Third One’s sword, we must leave Jerusalem right away!’
Definitely, that command surprised everyone. Everybody standing at attention before the king in his courts.
Yet none of those courtiers could give voice to their astonishment. But, at least, Joab made the effort.
The middle-aged general knew the army of Israel so well. The excellence of their might and skill. The glory of their battles and triumphs. He knew his ruthless army like the back of his hand.
Aw, no matter how strong the prince’s bones are now, can they be as iron as the lion? Why won’t he be crushed if my lord the king gives the order now?
Or why is the battle axe of Israel slacking at this time of war?!
Then he tried to speak his mind. But his lips sifted the thoughts before they poured themselves out.
‘Why should we…?! I mean where do we flee, my lord?’
David’s response came more crushing. Far more than the soldier expected.
‘Anywhere!’ sighed the old one. ‘Anywhere away from home: we just keep going!’
Yes, it was a sad morning that fated day. And everybody bowed their heads low, for the loss of all things called valour.
Joab thought about it many times over. And whichever way he flipped the coin, he just couldn’t see David’s motivation.
If this was a battle tactic, he thought, then his soldiers had never used this kind before. In every way the captain flipped this, David was never one to flee from a battle.
But then again, Joab’s allegiance was always with the king. He had sworn to follow the old man to the end of everything.
So, without putting more words for a counter, he submitted completely. Then he directed the army to follow her king.
Yes, that dull cloudy morning, King David stood up from the glorious throne of Israel. And together with his wives and princes; his priests and ministers—
Yes, together with all his soldiers, and everyone on his side, he left behind the power and the glory, the might and dominion.
It was for a deadly appetite that he suffered so. It was for his sin with the wife of another man.
And he fled from the wrath of a dreadful God.
As Adam fled Eden.
