JUST as soon as the commander of David’s army stepped into the chamber of power, he sighted the Third Son leaving already.
This was the throne room and the favourite prince was done with his assignment there. Right before any adversary could show up.
Prince Absalom said his parting words, bowing down to the king as Joab stormed in with burning steps. And then the prince quietly took his leave.
The kindred foes almost collided at the doorway. Joab wanted to hold down this youngster and, in fact, demand what he was there for straightaway.
But the man knew his business was rather with the king. Not with ‘this sly cat’ who came in to eye the throne.
Or so were the general’s fuming thoughts.
So then, brave Joab decided to be cautious in order that he wouldn’t give himself away too early. And it was equally this thought that drummed within the skull of the young prince.
Therefore, the two cousins simply said a quiet greeting when their shoulders brushed against each other at the doorway.
Then, as soon as Absalom left and was out of the way, Joab raced up through the vast hall and through the high stairs to meet David.
He bowed himself to the ground, and the next word on his lip was the name of the one who’d just left.
He gasped. ‘Absalom... ah, Absalom!
‘Please don’t trust that young man, my lord! Please don’t!’
The monarch couldn’t help a big laugh hearing those words. He was already expecting this sort of thing. As a matter of fact, his humble son had prepared him for several little skepticisms along these lines.
Then again, this gentle third son had just left the throne room with the most peaceable request anyone could make.
His name again was Absalom, the Son of Peace.
And so, David was pretty amused. ‘Joab, oh Joab... is that what you came here for? Oh, I like your spirit! But you see, there’s nothing here to come this early to report.
‘If yourself know what my boy came to ask, you’ll be surprised you followed him all the way here for this! Or didn’t you tail him up here to find out what he’s up to?’
Joab didn’t bother answering. He just got up to his official seat before David, then he asked what he felt to ask.
‘What did he come to demand now, Your Majesty? What? Is it your crown?’
David laughed aloud. ‘Oh really, Joab!!
‘Well, I see you still can’t let go of whatever is stuck in your mind about this boy!
‘Look, if Absalom is asking for my crown, I should not sit this easy, you know. Or don’t you think asking for that is simply asking for my head?’
Now David leaned forward to tell his captain what the prince had come for.
And his next words were a total astonishment.
